overpopulation a problem? Essay -- essays research papers
Is Overpopulation a Serious Problem? à à à à à This question seems to be question that is asked quite frequently lately. In the last two centuries, population has skyrocketed. In 1800 the world population was only at 1 billion, and today itââ¬â¢s estimated that the world population exceeds six billion people. With overpopulation, many problems have arisen. Some believe that overpopulation is the reason for world hunger, global population will reach crisis proportions by 2050, and some believe that overpopulation will bring the extinction of the human race. When one looks at the arguments that these people present, its quite overwhelming the amount of evidence thatââ¬â¢s supports their argument. On the other side, the evidence for the opposing arguments is quite staggering as well. à à à à à In this paper I will give a brief description on two opposing arguments dealing with the issues of overpopulation and the effects that it may, or may not have on the present as well as the future. The two articles that I have chosen to analyze are ââ¬Å"Overpopulation Is a Serious Problemâ⬠written by Thomas Robert Malthus, and ââ¬Å"Overpopulation Is a Mythâ⬠by Frederick Engels. The titles of the articles are pretty self explanatory on the side that they take on this issue. à à à à à To begin with, Thomas Malthus wrote one of the most famous works on population, An Essay on the Principle of Population. He is a man who sticks to his values, and does what he preaches. He wants nothing more than to see the betterment of man, but he feels that itââ¬â¢s a long road with unconquerable difficulties to achieve this. Malthus states that this overpopulation is a huge problem that most people seem to ââ¬Å"purposely shut their eyes to such problemsâ⬠. A good metaphor that he uses about this is that if he were to offer a man a glass of wine repeatedly, and that man were to take no notice to it what-so-ever, he would think that man to be blind, or uncivilized. In his article, Overpopulation Is a Serious Problem, he states the many things that cause overpopulation. He states two postulates in his article about mankind. The first is that food is necessary for man. Without food man could not exist. Second he states that attraction and the passion bet ween the genders is a must, and will continue and will quite closely remain in its present state.  ... ...it absurd that the Malthusian theory states that we should let those in poverty die out, to balance out the population. Engels states that under the Malthusian theory that the poor consist to the surplus of the population should simply be left to die off, and that nothing should be done to them and that their lives cannot get it altered. à à à à à Engels has a great hatred for the Malthusian theory. ââ¬Å"And it is precisely this theory which is the conerstone of the liberal system of free trade, whose fall will bringteh whole edifice down with it.â⬠* He states that competition is the cause of misery, poverty and crime. He goes further to explain that Malthus had taken a one sided view. He did not pay attention to the fact that surplus population is always bound with surplus wealth, surplus landed property, and surplus capital. ââ¬Å"Population is too great only when productive power in general is too great.â⬠* This is proven in every overpopulated country. à à à à à From what I have learned trough class and life I firmly believe in what Thomas Malthus point of view. I believe that overpopulation is a huge problem that we need to take a closer look at.

ââ¬ÅMythologyââ¬Â by Edith Hamilton
ââ¬Å"Mythologyâ⬠By Edith Hamilton Mythology is mainly known for the pagan religions that dominated Europe during the times of the Greek and Roman Empires. The main pagan religion being that of the Greek gods like Zeus, Hera, Ares, and Hercules which was the most prevalent and accepted amongst Europeans at the time. The religions although very harsh and unforgiving were prevalent because the people needed a strong spiritual source to depend on. The people needed a sense of unity in order to have their rising civilizations succeed. The people need someone to blame for the many negative things that may have happened during their times. All of these things contributed to the success and need for the pagan religions in Europe. The Greek pagan gods were a very harsh and unforgiving lot. Zeus the father of the gods along with his brothers betrayed and banished his father Kronos after he tried to devour them all. Zeus then tricked his brother Hades into being the master of the Underwo rld where only death and sorrow prevailed and Poseidon the king of the Oceans. He then proceeded to make himself the ruler of the gods effectively making sure he wasnââ¬â¢t challenged as he ruled from the heavens. In the same way the people of the Greek and Roman empires pursued power and fame. The Greek city states warred with each other endlessly, constantly making and breaking alliances in order to gain the upper hand in the name of their respective god or gods. The two gods who were the cause of the greatest of catastrophes were Athena and Ares. Which were the gods of the city states of Sparta and Athens. Both of the city states believed that their god was superior and that they should in turn rule over the other Greek city states and all the other lesser gods. This led to great conflicts between the two nations which in mythology is depicted by the grand arguments and betrayals that Athena and Ares committed on one another. The people always praised their gods and offered them bountiful gifts and sacrifices. They believed that in doing this the gods would grant them the ability to win any war or avoid any catastrophe. With this feeling of superiority and divine intervention they felt invincible and so always went out to carve out their empires at the expense of lives and money.Because of all the bloodshed brought forth from the different gods and different cultures ending in wars it was necessary for the Greek and Roman city states to have gods that were strong and merciless. The people needed to know that their god would not allow any other nation or god to harm his people or disturb his domain. Anywhere where the dominant god was not of a warrior personality city states fell to more aggressive ones and anywhere that these aggressive city states went they carved out territories and imposed even greater control of entire regions. A weak god was indeed a weakness and a strong, merciless one was indeed the way to go.

City and Country Life
?If you have two choices, which one will you choose: city life or country life? Some people think that living in a city is more advantageous than living in a country. However, others insist upon the idea that living in a country is unquestionably fascinating. This essay will compare and contrast the city life and the country life with their similar and different facilities in terms of environment, employment and facilities. To begin with, there is the city life and country life to be similar. People want to live in near amenities such as shopping center, hospital, post office and transport. However, I can say that environment in cities are much more developed. Townies have good transportation facilities with many buses, trains, cabs or subways. However, they are always blocked into traffic jam unlike in towns where there are less people. In cities, they can go and watch a play performed in a theater or a film in the cinema, they can watch operas or musicals, they can go night clubs or pubs with your friends to have a cheat and drink beer. However, in towns, you cannot do these. But it does not mean that you cannot have fun.You can go festivals, bonfires. You can watch the stars on the sky at nights. You can have long and peaceful walks among the trees. Some can dismiss these as they are boring, but the only thing that can be said is it is up to you. Therefore, if people want to live in city they are more convenient than country but, country can live a relaxed life. From here, I can pass my second topic which is about employment. In cities, employment system is same as countries system. People give resume to employment and they choose employee. However, townies can find a job easier than countries people because the cities have more diverse profession. Also in cities, they have various job opportunities through which you can earn billions. However, in towns, there are no job opportunities like that. However, again you do not need much money to live by because coun try prices are cheaper than city prices. In conclusion, city people have chance to get much money but, they need more money than country people. Lastly, we can compare and contrast city and country life in terms of facilities. Two places equipped with all amenities. They can use hospital, shopping center and theater, but in cities, they have too many doctors and hospitals to look after you when they are ill. These hospitals help them to recover quickly with doctors latest technological devices. On the other hand, in countries they generally do not have these, but they are healthy although not always. There is no air population, sea population, noise population. In addition, city has many places to buy clothes, books, CDs etc.On the other hand, in country, it is hard to find the book they want to read, or the film they want to watch. They do not have luxurious shops to buy different clothes, but actually it is not a problem for them because they are not obsessive about their appearanc e like those in cities. In conclusion, neither city living nor country living is the best. Both are different from or similar to each other in terms of living conditions, to get jobs and amenity. You can prefer one according to your thoughts and hobbies. The best choice for you is the place you can love and adapt yourself easily.

Justification of Humanities Essay
The humanities have been studied since ancient Grecian times as an academic discipline, examining human condition and including the arts, literature, philosophy, history and some social sciences. In 2008, nationally recognized and respected literary theorist Stanley Fish wrote a New York Times article in response to a New York State Commission on Higher Education report in which people posted complaints that the humanities are always the last to be financially funded. Fish sums up his argument with an insulting conclusive statement: ââ¬Å"To the question ââ¬Ëof what use are humanities? ââ¬â¢, the only honest answer is none whatsoeverâ⬠. He backs up this claim by pointing out the lack of tangible evidence that is produced by humanities compared to science and other fields. I assert that Fish underestimates the power of the intangible benefits that the humanities have to offer. His overall argument against the value of humanities presents a point-of-view that is extreme, reductive, and insulting to anyone associated with the humanities and the study of them. An education involving the study of humanities enables readers with skills that are applicable in understanding and comprehending contemporary media and literature. Literature, for that matter, effects people morally and possibly behaviorally and that effect, positive or negative, is ââ¬Ëof useââ¬â¢. Narrative literature and historical texts also allow readers to build a bridge and connect with the past and its people. The media has become an inevitable part of our society today and, unfortunately, media manipulation has as well. Public relations companies and the government have hidden agendas that the journalists blindly incorporate into their stories and columns. People are paid to make the American public perceive pictures and articles in a deceitful, false way in order to sell a war or downplay a disaster. In 1996 John Rendon, the founder of The Rendon Group, a public relations firm, admitted to U. S. Air Force cadets that the Gulf War in Iraq had been a big project for his company. He even talked about generating deceiving photographs! Looking back in history through other conflicts (i. e. , Vietnam, Iraq), or political issues or even stories of famous individuals, we can observe many situations similar to what Rendon explained that supports a recurring complaint in our culture, whether provable or not, that the press will print stories without evidence if they make more money in the process. Specifically, the media coverage after the 911 attacks were constant and focused on Osama bin Laden as the mastermind behind the attacks and on Iraq having ââ¬Ëweapons of mass destructionââ¬â¢ as they were told by authorities. Pro-war sources were disproportionately focused on over anti-war sources which helped build misguided public support for our war on terrorism and on Iraq. But we now know WMDs were not in existence there, but this shows the power of media stories, no matter whether based on fact, and its ability to influence society and the power it can take away from us by eliminating fully-informed decision-making. By being exposed to manipulating and deceiving narrators such as Lolitaââ¬â¢s Humbert Humbert and Holden Caulfield in The Catcher In the Rye, students gain experience in detecting this fraudulence or bias. Also, through involvement with this type of reading and writing, the ability to sense when they are being propagandized or manipulated. An education that includes humanities provides tools for people to consciously keep from falling for the bias and hidden slander that is involved, especially with politics. This awareness can cause better decision-making (voting especially) and affect a personââ¬â¢s opinion very greatly. Exposure to humanities can cause people to be less egocentric and can arm them with a point-of-view that will help them see through narrow-minded opinions and statements, like Fishââ¬â¢s, and develop their own sound, fact-based and well-rounded opinions. Fish also comments in his article, ââ¬Å"What do they [humanities] do? They donââ¬â¢t do anything, if by ââ¬Ëdoââ¬â¢ is meant bring about effects in the worldâ⬠. This claim is resting upon the questionable understanding that the ââ¬Ëdoââ¬â¢ is supposed to yield a tangible product, a constant misconception Fish seems to have. I am arguing that an effect on a person, positive or negative, implies that something was ââ¬Ëdoneââ¬â¢ to have caused that effect. Fish himself names many examples of literature affecting its readers; he just chooses to discard them and remain skeptical. Countless examples have affected millions of people. Rachel Carsonââ¬â¢s Silent Spring is commonly credited for the launch of the environmental awareness movement. The Bible itself is a form of literature, and I am sure that Stanley Fish cannot argue that The Bible has not affected the world! Dr. Seuss books affect children and adults all over the world with their simple yet effective messages through the creative rhyming. The Food and Drug Administration was founded as a latter result to Sinclairââ¬â¢s The Jungle, and I believe that this would be considered an example of ââ¬Ëdoingââ¬â¢ something, even according to Fish. Books, and all forms of art, can cause people to reflect on the plot, the characters, or the ethical questions being pondered in the story. We can contemplate character attributes we appreciate or reject and watch scenarios unfold in books that can be comparable to situations in our own lives. Fish believes ââ¬Å"it is not the business of the humanities to save usâ⬠, but I do believe an education in humanities can help us save us from the ââ¬Å"worst of ourselvesâ⬠by helping us become more well-rounded citizens with an understanding of the past so we can head effectively and productively into the future. I agree with Kronman who Fish quotes as saying ââ¬Å"a college was above all a place for the training of characterâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . This completely supports an intelligent quote by Martin Luther King Jr. King said, ââ¬Å"Intelligence plus characterââ¬âthat is the true goal of education. â⬠Without any humanities incorporated in a personââ¬â¢s education, can this goal be fully achieved? The renowned Spanish-American essayist George Santayana said, ââ¬Å"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat itâ⬠, and I cannot agree more with this claim. It highlights the importance of an education in history, another branch of the humanities discipline. Having a connection and understanding with the past allows us to gain appreciation for the world today and learn from the mistakes made through history, so those mistakes are not repeated. For example, the very foundation of Americaââ¬â¢s government was created through utilizing documentations of various governments implemented through history! The founding fathers sifted through accounts of different governments and how successful they were and used them to form the Constitution. For example, they applied the system of checks and balances in order balance power among the braches and stray from the way that Britainââ¬â¢s monarchy was established. Books and the arts used to be manââ¬â¢s sole form of entertainment and it is amazing to read the thoughts and see the creations of a person from so long ago! Narrative literature, especially from the past, allows us to delve into the mindset of someone from a different time, and that is something that no history book can teach. The readings assigned in humanities classes expand studentsââ¬â¢ knowledge of life and ethics from a different time period and examines why this ethical mindset existed in the historical context. We reflect and compare the morals of those in the past to our own, making connections with the past yet also seeing the development of ethics and moral behavior through time. Teachings in humanities can be directly applied to the commercial culture that is present in our society today, especially with the deceitful and biased influences in the media. Literature has direct effects on us on an emotional, ethical and logical level and the connection that is made through books with the past is undoubtedly one of the most helpful insights of the past. Fishââ¬â¢s argument was immature and was based merely on tangible products, a close-minded viewpoint that overlooks the power of thought and the mind! My contrasting opinion defends the impalpable and in that sense, suggests humanities can contribute to improving a reader personally and potentially benefit the future of society greatly.

Notes on contracts in law
Notes on contracts in law BY Diffract In this case, a lawfully tying contract does not remain with Nathan and Dubious Connections Pity Ltd. Without any learning of the terms and conditions, Nathan, unconscious of the three-year term contract he wishes to return the product and withdraw the contract. The issue intended for this situation be if the agreement is still legitimate. Under the substance of the agreement, the legitimate rights accessible to Nathan are; the attempt to sue for 1 misrepresentation, unfair contract terms or unconscionable conduct. As indicated by Flake's Bulletin to enter the level of heir cases, obligation will Just draw in adulterations, in the event that they are (1) material, and (2) impelled the other sided. (Tipper & Wagner, 2014) However the four steps which need to be recognized in choosing whether an actionable misrepresentation exists are as emulated; Step one is that a false proclamation made. The situation being what it is in this event a false procla mation was proclaimed as John pushed a free Isis. Phone if an agreement altered. Of course, Nathan certified in the case that he will get a phone in the event that he had signed the contract. Antennas interpretation is the Isis. Phone is a complimentary gift to the contract. At this point, it is a false proclamation. ( ALIT v. KRUGER [1955] HOC 64; (1955) 94 CLC 216)5 Step two; material fact. Step two is whether the deception was proposed to and did actuate the other party to perform 6(With v Flanagan [1936] Chi 575).It is a difficult step to demonstrate as it is hard to tell whether John utilized false data about the uncommon advancement to affect Nathan into marking an agreement. However seeing that John is a sales representative, and he was well aware of Antennas exceptional hindrance, he fizzled the gained important. Agree to the vitality of a contract, realizing that the criticalness of a mediator might have had any effect, in closing Antennas definite choice. Easy to say this makes it simple to foresee that John exploited this circumstance.Step three; requires the false proclamation be straightforward to the opposite party. Dubious associations are required to equip all staff members with full training which includes a great deals pitch, great information about the item, the right hopefuls who qualify. The terms in agreement that additionally alludes to end of the contract and the creation of lawfulness. The administration Dubious associations offers might be to any persons over 18 years of age, individuals, business and organizations. The key characteristic of a sales representative is its ââ¬Å"pitchâ⬠directly to the intended party. The last step is Inducement ââ¬â to see whether the represented party made the false misrepresentation eloquent it to be untrue, whether it was real or not 7(Deere v Peek [1889]). John might not have known whether Nathan could completely understand the English dialect, and if the advancement was real, yet he carel essly did not know, and he ought to have known. SIS CAL) John and Dubious associations Pity Ltd offer of the phone contract were significant distortion, John's act of silence is an evident factor to the inducement of this case. However because of the trouble in demonstrating deformation John may contend Antennas lapse of actuality. One of the torts is deceit, depicting impossibilities to reject hazard as a distinct has not met all requirements for endeavourer his own mindset, Nathan will need to pay the full contract cost of $3120 in addition, $800 the cost of the Isis. 1 phone. The three-year term contract misunderstood outlines the infusion, where Nathan believed if the contracted ended whenever throughout this period it would be at no cost.Antennas best strategy might be an attempt to sue for actionable misrepresentation as the rejection provision will not incorporate. Likewise if the realities of the case show deceit there is a much higher possibility of winning the case and acce pting harms. The actualities of the case indicate a significant deception because of the inducement of silence, this incited Nathan into the agreement, involved deceit. In this event, utilizing the advice for Nathan on the legitimate rights that he had and what ours of action to take, actionable misrepresentation will be highly recommended. The remedy for actionable misrepresentation is rescission ââ¬â the perception may set aside, and the social occasions restored to their positions before the ascension ââ¬â by the innocent party. UNFAIR CONTRACT TEEMS Another alternative that Nathan may come across to sue for is contractual terms which have the potential to be unfair. In choosing whether a term in a standard structure buyer contract is unjustifiable, the court will apply the three components which test for unfairness. The analysis intended for injustice, under s. Big of the ASIA ACTA, states that a term of a consumer contract is out of line in the event that: Overlooks a cr itical lopsidedness reason through the parties civil privileges as well as commitments emerging under the agreement and; Is not sensibly imperative to guarantee the genuine redirections of the gathering who would subsist benefit by means of the term and; Who of which is determined to create impediment (either budgetary or overall) to a party in the event it was too depended on or connected. These three factors of the unfairness test must be demonstrated, on the offset of rehabilitates, to exist for the court to choose that a term is unfair 10. Antennas first claim in an try to sue for unfairness through the ââ¬Ëbalance of probabilities' is whether he comprehended the agreement he would have the capacity to predict the additional cost involved. As opposed to John, if he did the math, he would acknowledge Nathan ââ¬Ëmeager allowance' can barely take care of the expense of the three-year term contract yet alone surcharges upon this contract.Surely, to be qualified for a phone plan a need to have a stable salary is vital for any human being. A wise sales representative will be prudent enough to realize that Nathan was not a suitable customer for his product. The significant imbalance is plainly highlighted constraining Antennas authorization. Despite the fact that the terms may have unveiled in the record, Nathan was not given any genuine opportunity to arrange the terms of the agreement.Nathan may try to prove that he was extremely distressed when he received the monthly phone bill from Dubious Connections Pity Ltd and had to find other means to be able to honor that contract. Also, he may have been distressed when he found out he had o pay $3120 to terminate the contract with an additional cost $800 for the Isis. 1 phone. The most difficult thing in claiming unfairness for consumer contract term is whether a particular term is unfair with regards to all relevant circumstances. The best venture for Nathan would be to rescind the contract; It is, however, not sufficient it may be grant. UNCONSCIONABLE CONDUCT On the other hand under the Australian Consumer Law states; when managing different organizations or clients, organizations should not participate in unconscionable behavior. Unconscionable managing over see's the behavior of the arty that is stronger in endeavoring in the direction of achievement or hold the individuals profit under a ââ¬Ëspecial disadvantage' in the circumstances where it is not reliable with great value that he does so. 1 (Lexis's, 2014) The court typically accepts that the gatherings to an agreement are comparable, containing equivalent bartering force. However an agreement is unconscionable (Commercial bank of Australia v Maida) if: 1) One party has super bartering force 2) The other party has the outstanding potential/ unique detriments, such as education issue or the absence of the ability to speak English. ) The parties enter to take it or leave it contract. Nathan must demonstrate that the agreement has breached. The principal approach to check whether it has; is by checking whether any of the express terms have ruptured, as the agreement was a contract of purchase it would Just hold terms identifying with buy, deal, guarantees and the rejection condition. Where no express terms have ruptured the next step might be to check whether any of the intimate terms has breached. Initially, the implied term that has breached is the term of the ability to speak English. An individual required to have a 12â⬠³special disadvantageâ⬠remembering the final objective to be weak to unconscionable behavior. This visualized conditions which genuinely influenced the experience of the person to make a Judgment as to his best interest. However, for this situation, the deals illustrative of Dubious associations did not try to recognize whether his client experienced any extraordinary impediment. 13 (AC v Lug Distributors Pity Ltd, deckhand and Eng, 2013) Nathan was not mindful of the distortion be fore the agreement and any investigation made by Nathan might not eave uncovered the imperfection. The term of ââ¬Ëspecial disadvantage' has plainly breached. The following implied term that has breached is: Unconscionable conduct under section 21 of the Commonwealth Consolidated Acts. In the event that John is having knowledge that Nathan possesses an event of exceptional impediment in connection to the planned deal, so that Nathan cannot make a Judgment in respect to what is in his premiums, exploits his predominant dealing authority as a result of going into the agreement, Antennas behavior by this manner is unconscionable.Furthermore if, as opposed to containing real information of that event, John is mindful of the probability that the event may possibly subsist otherwise is mindful of actualities which might cause plausibility with the intelligence of any sensible human being, the outcome will be the alike. 14(Business bank of Australia v Maida) Antennas experience as to the contract was a free telephone which he can return at whichever point. Whether Nathan is treat with the knowledge of the probability viable discussed or as have taken in of substances that may accumulate that conceivability up the intelligence of any sensible individual. The relentless conclusion subsist to facilitate John was at risk of unconscionable lead, by entering into the understanding exclusive of uncovering essential information that may have enabled the respondents to structure a ruling designed for there selves, also with no guaranteeing with the aim of receiving free exhortation. (Business bank of Australia v Maida) As expected that Nathan explained to the sales representative, he needed a mobile phone and queried as to whether it would accommodate to make phone calls abroad.Anticipating John answered with a positive manner; Nathan depended on the sales preventative information and along these lines marked the agreement 1 5(David Jones Ltd v Wills [1934] 52 CLC 110). Howe ver John was mindful he knew nothing about the agreement, where he did not try to clarify the abundance cost in preceding this agreement. The Trade Practices Catch does not permit prohibited terms under section 68. On the off chance that any term of the agreement that indicates to prohibit, confine or alter or has the impact of barring limiting or changing areas of the Trade Practices Act is void.

Blasted Wabbitt Essay Research Paper Insomnia is
Blasted Wabbitt Essay, Research Paper Insomnia is the perceptual experience or ailment of unequal or poor-quality slumber because of one or more of the followers: 1.difficulty falling asleep 2 ) waking up often during the dark with trouble returning to kip 3 ) waking up to early in the forenoon 4 ) unrefreshing slumber. Insomnia is non defined by the figure of hours of slumber a individual gets or how long it takes to fall asleep. Persons vary usually in their demand for, and their satisfaction with, slumber. The relationship between Religion and Ethics in todays World Essay
The relationship between Religion and Ethics in todays World - Essay Example But we see everyday ethical notions being deliberated upon and changed to suit particular circumstances and individual and mass preferences. Religious precepts are based on the revelations of the original prophets. The precepts were later formalized into written texts of all the religions. Whereas on one hand religious precepts lay the roadmap to salvation, on the other, they also help a human to judge between right and wrong. But slowly decadence set in the free thinking ideals of every religion and the religious precepts got permanence as dogmas. The modern ethics are based upon the theories of ancient Greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. The ethical notions witnessed resurgence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The ideas of liberty, freedom and equality took route in European society later got spread out all over the world. What began as an intellectual movement pioneered by such free thinkers as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Hobbes acquired political dimensions in the French Revolution and the American War of Independence. Individual liberty is both the cause and effect of free thinking. Free thinking also promotes the cause of ethical judgment. The sphere of Ethics now spreads beyond individualized thinking to help mankind to frame rules for societies, cultures, and countries. What may be ethical in one country, a geo-political region, or a continent may not be so in another. In other words, ethics hold a huge scope for variance, and argument, whereas religion is guided by dogmas that are most part rigid, unalterable and beyond question. Religious dogmas, too, may have had very logical origin but with passage of time they come to be accepted as divine ordainments and have to be accepted by the people without question. The clash of religion and ethics today gets reflected in different forms. The debate over ethics and
